I'm looking to buy some wooden flooring and I've just seen a dark bamboo
one that I like in Homebase that is currently £29.99 / sq metre, which
will be £26.99 / sq metre when they have their usual 10% weekend next
week, and I was wondering if anybody knew of anything around at the
moment that could beat that price.

Wooden flooring - how old fashioned! Most of my friends are now ripping
it all up and laying carpet again. Common problems appear to be:

Cold and draughty
Noisy
Fur balls running in drifts around the bottom of the walls
Slippery when wet
Slippery when dry
Scuffs / scratches
Things *always* break when you accidentally drop them

Personally, I've never liked wooden floors whether it be floorboards, or
overlay of proper wood or the cheap and tacky laminate stuff. I liked it
even less when it became "trendy".

Hello,

I couldn't agree more - those cheap laminate floors become popular after
being promoted on DIY programmes. They are cold, damage easily and make the
room echo more. They are horrible compared to a floor with a good underlay
and decent quality carpet. I have wood block flooring over the ground floor
that is covered by an underlay and carpet, it makes the area look a lot
better.
Cheap laminate flooring or that fake lino looks cheap nd says a lot about
the person that has it!
All of my friends have also either removed it or put carpet over the top.

carpets hold dirt and germs
you never get the dirt out
wood or laminate flooring is easily cleaned
i would never go back to carpets
only part of my house carpeted is the stairs and thats just for the noise
issue
my two penneth
as for the build up of dust and fur
perhaps the guy should try cleaning sometimes

What?
Who mentioned cheap laminate. The OP was on about solid wood flooring
Now answer the bloody question

The bamboo is zillions of tiny strips. If you like this - fine BUT be
careful as more to come apart.
Personally, for similar money I would recommend real Oak on engineering
board (also real wood NOT HDF)
Look at the Kahrs range - well respected make and amazing value

Hi,

I'm planning on having real wood floors fitted in my new house as
well, http://www.flooringsupplies.co.uk/index.cfm is certainly a good
place to buy the floor from but they do not have a fitting service and
will not recommend one either!! So does anyone know of a reliable,
quality wooden floor fitter in the Norfolk/East Anglia area?

Costco have some solid wood (about 1cm thick) American Oak flooring
at about that price or a bit less.

I fitted real oak in my living room & really regret it. We never use the
room & it scratches really easy & marks badly. Wouldn't have it again
BUT the costco price is good for that flooring!

They appear to have a couple more types in the Watford store today
but was in a bit of a rush so didn't have a chance to see what they
were I'm afraid. Must say I would much prefer 1cm of solid wood
(which you can resurface many times) to a laminate a few mm thick or
worse that plastic picture laminate.

Estate agents will claim it 'adds character'! Are you sure it was
oak? The beech stuff I had hardly showed a mark after twelve years.

Wouldn't have it again BUT the costco price is good for that
flooring!
