TSUNAMI DISASTER EDUCATION APPEAL.

I am organizing sending as many recycled PC's to the affected areas to
replace the ones destroyed in the schools etc. This will help the long term
goal of getting the villages and towns back to some sort of normality.

At the time of writing i am hoping to ship in around 4 months, so around
early April 2005.

As well as PC's, software and I.T related equipment is needed, as well as
funds to cover fuel & shipping costs to get the items to one location ready
to have the software pre installed prior to surface shipping, i have local
computer clubs ready to help do that, but i need help moving items that have
been donated so far and for the many more i hope to get over the next 2
months.

I am getting local media coverage which is a start, and i hope this will
help further but here's what i need at the moment.

Working PC's. Anything above 350-400 mhz would do, Monitors and spare parts,
cables etc.
Networking equipment and other I.T related hardware. Any around Sheffield /
Yorkshire would make it easier to start off with which is where i am and the
offers of help with hands on computer setup is at the moment.

Cash. So far i have had offers of help from a local van hire firm, but i
need to cover fuel costs. Some people have offered good items, but i need to
cover postage.

If a large amount of computers can be sourced further away then hopefully i
can get cheap or discounted shipping, again which is why cash donations
would be needed,

A 40 foot container looks like costing around £1800. That can hold a lot of
items, but other small costs are involved in setting up the items and
getting them shipped. I have had firm offers of people willing to take time
off work to help set up the computers on arrival, but i need to cover
airfare, food and accommodation for a couple of people to oversee the
arrival and setting up on arrival with the help of locals.

Any amount of financial help is appreciated . This is a natural disaster
that has affected the whole world, and this is about the only way i can give
some positive help back for a change. These local towns and schools need to
get back to a normal life as soon as possible.

At the moment i am getting locations and the local language spoken
information for where the items are to be sent, but i need to get the ball
rolling NOW. I know this time of year many people do not have a lot of spare
cash, or have given already, i know thats the same for me, so anything at
all you can donate is taken with many thanks.

I can be contacted on.

Donations can be sent to

What ever you can afford to give, no matter how small, or any other help is
received with much thanks.

Yes you did post that here already. It seemed a daft idea then and
it seems a daft idea now.

If you're not sure what to send, send cash - useable for local
purchases!

The cash will dry up as soon as the media stops ramming the disaster
down our throats, apathy will creep back until the next disaster,
nothing will be done about the problems that exist all year around,
then his idea will help the people, not the victims at *this* time.

Seen quite a few 'tight' angles taken from aeroplanes at several thousand
feet. These 'tight' angles don't seem to confirm what your 'cousin' has
'said'.

Perhaps a different planet?

I think the three minute suggestion came from Brussels

I think the reason that feel so compassionate about the events in Asia is
that it reminds us how weak and pathetic we are; we can land on the moon and
invent a million gadgets that make us feel superior to the previous
generation, but 150,000+ died because we cant control nature and that is
incredibly humbling.

I totally agree, the respective governments should have made funds available
as soon as the technology was available.

I saw an article on Fox news a few days ago; it said that Alaska (which has
similar fault lines) installed the warning system many years ago and when an
Earthquake rating 6.9 on the Richter scale occurred only 9 civilians died as
everyone was evacuated hours in advance.

Well my Thai friend has just lost two of her family in Phi Phi Island
and have not heard of a family I know in Inodensia since the Tsunami.
And my Thai friend does not say how wonderful it is at the moment.
But giving out a brave face and trying to help the survivors. But
your cousin is right in that some parts are back to normal in fact in
the daily mail show few days later a photo full of tourist sunbathing
again. Which few days ago was choas.

Cause life goes on

But if you notice the news over the last few days, local ppl now get
bruied in mass graves. The family never know if their family member
survive or bury them in a traditional way. Whilst the foriegeners are
being frozen, DNA, etc to get a match.

Lastly for Dexter, people do support their family first, but also some
ppl feel like they should help the people there. Who lost everything,
just like we feel like we have to help you live on DLA. And yes I
know how difficult DLA is to apply. But you are having your cake and
eat it! If you do not want a caring society, goto the GULF. (not
saying the people in the Gulf are not caring.) But in the Gulf there
is no taxes, but also no social security. so like when my best friend
father died, their was no income support, no housing benefit, no DLA,
no widows pension etc.

But going by your preivous posts those people who thought during those
two world war why should we care? Why should we give money to british
legion, show them respect etc? (NB: I do give to british legion and
show them respect.) About 3 minute silence, it is just happen, the
world war has been ove 50 years ago, maybe next year it will be
increase to 3 minutes, or maybe the Tsunami won't have it anymore.
Also some places was doing "1 minute silence". But have to say I do
agree with you in that we should learn more and treat our war verterns
better than we currently do. In Russia it is a complete day off.

this prove how stupid you are!

OK here are some things

do you know how much that system cost?

do you know how often Tsunami hit that area?

Now the govenment have "much" higher priority to spend their limited
funds on (not talking about weapons) than setting up an early warning
system which might never be use. (insight is wonderful but remember we
do not have that when making deciesion.) Why don't UK have one of
these, we are on the Atlantic and can "QUITE EASILY" get a tsunami as
well!

After the train crash in UK, the one between Swansea and London it was
determine that if ATP was install those lives would be safe. But
guess what? It was decided that lives it would save was not worth the
money it would cost to install. Money is better spent elsewhere.

Also lastly remember reading / seeing that America using sat and stuff
actually knew this Tsunami was coming but "DIDN'T KNOW WHO TO CALL."
(one reason is cause of sat images, detection to detect if anyone is
doing nuclear testing etc." Well sorry couldn't they think "we better
call the governments of those countries, who can than warn its people
by tv, radio, going with army, etc.

sorry that is one issue which gets to me, when ppl say they should of
had this early warning system. These countries are not rich, and it
cost "MONEY".

Same could be said of many things here vs NHS, Education etc. In fact the
world over its the same story. In the states the division bet. Poor and
Wealthy can be quite amazing.

Also an EWS needs International funding. bet Coutries. Cant imagine
different countries want to subsidise one another for something that is a
rare occurence. Surely you can relate to this sentiment :)

Thats war. War is different and always gets funding. (Except British
Infantry of course!) There is "the deterrant" argument and all different
kinds of issues of which I am sure you are well aware.

True, the government can always do more, they *always* have reserves

Get real, the annual NHS budget is already several Billion pounds. Just think
how much real good they could do with the £3Bn they are about to throw at ID
Cards...probably closer to £30Bn by the time it is finished !

That is exactly the point, the key people can do more to clear the=20
lists if the nurse were in position to carry out the after care.
the ID fiasco is a smokescreen and how much is the g/ment prepared to=20
pay for the luxuries as opposed to the necessities?
