Thanks for the replies.
I'm torn between the Sony DVP-NS330 Multi-region DVD Player and the Toshiba
SD330E Multi-region DVD Player .
Toshiba looks nicer.
Any owners opinions?

Sorry to butt in here but (!)
Having worked in retail for 17 years, including many many years in Hi-Fi (I
was a director for Richer Sounds for 5 years), do not under any
circumstances buy a Sony when a Toshiba is a) Better b) Usually cheaper
c)Much more reliable.
I know I will get shouted doen in droves for this but if you ever saw the
amount of returned Sony product Vs Toshiba you would know why. Sont have a
very very clever marketing Dept. who lull people into a false brand loyalty.
Here we go, waiting for rude replies.......

And that's absolute bull****.
I sold lots of TVs at Dixons, and wouldn't say that Sony failure rate
was any higher than other quality brands.
Although my personal favourite has always been Panasonic - I do have a
fair bit of Sony kit around the house, and am more than happy with it.

Actually it's not bull****, you worked for Dixons, what would you know, oh
hang on! You only cared if an extended warrabty went with it......... Plus
Dixons staff never have to deal with the fallout as you just all say 'phone

FYI I left Dixons because of the extended warranty sales scam.
But I did see enough TVs go through the door to know that Sony are
generally reliable. Expensive for what you get - but reliable.
Didn't sell _that_ many Sony sets, mainly because I could sell a better
spec. TV from Philips / Panasonic / Toshiba for the same money as the
Sony people were originally looking at.

Original or new? - I fancy an old one myself, but they're just not daily

The last two Sony products that I purchased, both failed within 12
months. Both were replaced with other manufacturers products, and I
have had no trouble with these. I still have a Sony TV though, which
is about 14 years old, and people still comment on the picture
quality, but I think Sony's were built better 14 years ago.
I don't think that I would buy another Sony product, because of the
recent failures that I have experienced.

You have to remember, Sony have had a major shakeup in the last few
years to combat the budget goods on the streets. Buying Sony no longer
guarentees you quality. There is cheapo Sony £89 VCR's and there is
decent Sony £300 VCR's Likewise for most other products in the Sony
range. You only get what you pay for. My experience of Sony has been
excellent, had trouble with a couple of items, but on the whole, always
good.
I used to work in the repair trade for an official Sony repair centre
(which was also a repair centre for virtually all other name brands),
and Arcadia is talking bull****. Sony have no worse reliability than
any other manufacturer in their class... Given the choice, and inside
knowledge I would by Sony every time (less perhaps a Panasonic TV).

IMHO, big brands are there to exploit the spending habits of the
irrational consumer. After all, in many (NOT ALL) cases, the brand is
just a badge and a status symbol. If that is what you want to buy
into, fine. You wont be the exception, otherwise, famous brand
sportswear would simply not exist.
Being the logical consumer that I am, I would weigh up the long term
implications of the purchase ... do I pay £200 for a top brand item
and it may last for 10 years or do I pay £50 for one from ASDA and it
may last 3 years?
Well, if I replace the Asda item every 3 years, I will end up paying
£150 for 9 years worth of use of that item. Also, the item I buy in
the 3rd and 6th year will have better features and more up to date
than the initial purchase in year one, so the latter will be the
preferable option for me.
This may sound a purely mechanical way of making a purchase decision,
but it works for me and I end up usually with the latest gadgets with
the newest features as opposed to my brand conscious friend who is
still currently using a £600 Sony DVD player from 4 years ago that
does not play CDRs, DVDRs, MP3s, VCDs, SVCDs, KVCDs or JPEGs.

Has anyone considered the possibility that certain brands may be made in
the same factory with a different badge slapped on the front?...as is
the case with many electrical items in the home.
In which case...which barnds are equivalent in this manner?

Your figures are a bit exagerated as the top brand manufacturers are now
catering for the lower end of the market as well. DVD players are more in
this range:
A top brand item such as the Sony I mentioned earlier could cost as little
as £80 or therese a Panasonic at Tesco.com for £78.00
Asda cheap brand item costs around £50 as you said
Both items would probably last around the same time, the Sony or Panasonic
maybe a bit longer, but it would look much smarter and give the impression
of being a more expensive item
Just my thoughts maybe but i'd sooner have a Sony / Panasonic / Toshiba etc
sitting under my TV than a Samsunonic / Parasonic / Bush / Pacific etc

I have owned three 4 DVD players, a cheapo Dansai, failed in a towards end
of 1st year, a cheapo Asda one, failed after few weeks, an LG, still going
strong, good picture and sound, and my favourite, used as the main player, a
Sony, which has superb sound and picture. It won't play all vcd's but I
don't want it too, prefer just to watch top quality colour reproduction from
bought DVD's.
